Plymouth is the ideal ‘base’ for your school’s
visit to southeastern Massachusetts. Coastal New England offers
so much anyway but here you have the added feature of early American
history. More than that, it’s only a one-hour ride to Boston
or the heart of Cape Cod or an hour and a half to Newport, Rhode
Island!
The Sands offers comfortable rooms, plenty of bus parking, a
breakfast room, a private beach for tidal pool searches, and two
pools. We’re located 2 ½ miles south of the Rock,
across from Plimoth Plantation, in a safe residential area.
Plymouth offers students the famous Rock, the Pilgrims’
stepping stone to freedom in America. Right next to it at the
State Pier is Mayflower II, a representation of the tiny ship
that the Pilgrims rented to transport them across the Atlantic.
Two and a half miles south of the harbor sits Plimoth Plantation,
a faithful re-creation of the village as it was in 1627. You’ll
see thatched roofs, mud walls, and dirt floors. More importantly,
you’ll converse with the citizens of this English farming
town as they go about their daily chores. Most student groups
try to ‘stump’ the Pilgrims with questions. It hasn’t
been done yet! Pilgrim Hall Museum, back downtown, has many original
items (including a hunk of the Rock!) and is very student friendly.
To make this an interdisciplinary visit, take a whale watch. The
Capt. John boats have trained naturalists on board. Nature’s
largest mammals love to visit and, if you’re lucky, will
show their appreciation by jumping out of the water in front of
you! During the evening Colonial Lantern Tours will escort you
around Plymouth center and talk about colonial and Revolutionary
War-era Plymouth. A local middle school houses the Blake Planetarium,
where students can learn about latitude and longitude or how Capt.
Jones used celestial navigation to cross the ocean.
To the north, Boston offers the Freedom Trail, the Museum of
Science, the New England Aquarium, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts,
Duck Tours of the Charles and the Harbor, and views of three states
from the top of the John Hancock Tower!
